Princess Party Hats Tutorial

It’s that time of year again. It’s birthday season! Woot woot?

My youngest is about to turn three; a very stubborn, independent, strong-willed three years old. She has repeatedly (because I didn’t hear her the first gazillion times) informed me that she is to have a Princess Party and I aim please! For this party I have tried to do a healthy mix of store-bought items and homemade touches. I cannot wait to show you the results but first a simple tutorial on how to make an easy Princess party hat.

I didn’t want to simply buy some paper crowns or foam hats. I wanted something fun but didn’t require too much effort. I combined regular old run of the mill party hats with fun colored pieces of tulle. I think they turned out quite cute. As a bonus the Royal guests can enhance the cuteness with stickers and other personal touches.

Here’s what you need.

-Card Stock party hats that have seams you can undo
-Your color choice of tulle in a roll
-Hot glue gun or craft glue
-Scissors (a reminder just in case you were going to try to use your teeth since I didn’t picture it above)
-Optional: a spoon or wooden craft stick.

Carefully undo the seams of each of the party hats.

Determine the how long you’d like the strips of tulle for the topper.

I don’t think I gave myself enough options…thank you Amazon for making me a craft supply hoarder.

Multiply this by two and cut strips of tulle at that length

I did the lazy woman method and used a long canvas I had sitting near by. I rolled the tulle around and around. If you don’t have a canvas lying around (I’m not sure why you wouldn’t) you can use a piece of cardboard at the desired length. This method is less accurate if you are scared the children will notice but less time-consuming. I live on the edge so I’ll take the risk! Cut only one end of the rolled tulle.

Grab two strips of your freshly cut tulle and fold it in half. I suggest not using more than two strips otherwise your party hat will be too top-heavy and constantly slip off your child’s head. Twist the strips at the fold.

Apply hot glue or craft clue to the very top of the opened party hat. Place the twisted tip of the tulle on the glue. If you’re using hot glue please be careful not to burn yourself. The glue will seep straight through the tulle. Ouch! This is where the plastic spoon or wood stick could come in handy. Once I placed the tulle on the hot glue, I used the wooden stick to gently push the tulle down onto the glue.  Do this with just a few quick taps otherwise your wood stick will become part of your party hat.

Push the seams back together on the party hat and Voila! Princess party hats.

My two sassy princesses.
